Leandro Carreira’s highly anticipated restaurant and wine bar Londrino to open its doors in London Bridge
Leandro Carreira’s highly anticipated restaurant and wine bar will open its doors in London Bridge at the end of November. ‘Londrino’ will observe the flavours, traditions and ingredients from Leandro’s native Portugal, through the eyes of a chef that now calls London home.
Situated on the residential street of Snowsfields, Londrino will offer two separate dining spaces - an elegant a la carte restaurant open for lunch and dinner and a relaxed all-day wine bar for light meals and grazing.
"There will be a nod to Portugal on our menus, but I don’t want the creative process to end there. Both the restaurant and wine bar menus will evolve each week and will reflect the many influences of our culinary experiences."
Londrino's 70 seat restaurant will offer an a la carte menu that is influenced by the flavours of Portugal and has an emphasis on the sea. The team has sought out the best produce possible by working closely with British farmers and daily fishing boats, as well as sourcing unique ingredients from Portugal.
Diners can expect dishes such as Clams Bulhão Pato with coriander, Octopus with red pepper miso, Fermented potato with egg yolk & mustard, Beef Maronesa and Mackerel with Savoy cabbage & smoked seaweed butter. A regional Portuguese cheese trolley and dishes such as Grilled soaked brioche with sour caramel & hazelnuts and Requeijão with lemon curd, malt & vanilla waffle will be available for dessert.
The all-day, casual wine bar will seat 30 in total; 10 around a communal table, with a further 20 at the bar and around the room. This no-reservations space will offer small plates such as Grilled Quail with Toffee Mayo and Pão Doce with Lemon & Ibérico Ham, as well a choice of rare and often overlooked Portuguese cheeses and cured meats. The restaurant's full wine list will be available, with a continually changing selection of wines by the glass.
Born and raised in Leiria in Portugal, Leandro first started working in restaurants in Lisbon before travelling around Europe and the Middle East. He cut his teeth at Andoni Luis Aduriz’s famed Mugaritz, before coming to London and working at Nuno Mendes’ Viajante as Head Chef, and later at Lyle's and Koya. A year-long residency at Climpson’s Arch in Hackney’s London Fields in 2016 saw Leandro take a break from fine-dining, where he showcased the ingredients and traditions of regional Portugal through a new lens. Londrino, the Portuguese word for Londoner, is a culmination of these culinary influences and Leandro’s style of cooking, described last year by Amol Rajan as a “Portuguese orchestra melding so many different chords into a just-so harmony.”
Australian Cameron Dewar, who worked with Leandro at both Viajante and Climpson’s Arch, will be joining him as Manager-sommelier. Cameron has nurtured close relationships with small, craft producers from around Portugal to bring diners a unique wine list, which will focus on the Iberian Peninsula with natural and classic offerings from across Europe.
The interiors have been carefully considered to reflect the refined craftsmanship of Londrino’s food. The result is a slick and stylish yet functional space. Hand-painted tiles from Portugal in Londrino’s signature colours reference Leandro’s heritage and will feature on the bar and open kitchen. Statement floor to ceiling windows will flood Londrino with light in the summer, and maintain a feeling of openness in the winter. Throughout the summer months, the windows will open up onto a terrace where up to 20 can dine al fresco.
